Made Despite Unity

So - Most of you surely have already noticed that the internet is on fire because Unity changed the deal. They announced a fee beginning next year, where we have to pay a small amount of money to Unity for each install of your game. Of course you only have to pay if your game passes a certain amount of installs and revenue. This is already leading to an exodus of many developers, a hefty drop in Unity's stocks and a lot of feelings. Everything important about that new fee was said on many platforms by many developers, so we jump right on what this means for Waifu, Flying Realms and you.

Waifu will be finished and released with the Unity Engine. We don't want to basically freeze the entire development for a year (or whatever time it takes) to port the entire game to a different engine. You already have to wait way too long for big and interesting updates. I believe staying with Unity for Waifu will be the better choice for you.

Financially it should turn out fine in any way for us. If the game stays in our lovely niche I don't have to care about any fees. If Waifu becomes so successful that I have to pay the fee, I have enough to pay it and if I want to go insane, fight it with the help of a lawyer.

After Waifu I will definitely change to a different engine. I asked a friend and he recommended Godot and it also seems the first choice for many other Unity developers. The only big downside of this engine switch is that I can not jump right into the next project. I need to port my stuff, get used to a new workflow and learn about the kinks of the new engine.

Why can't I stay with Unity? Well, they are showing that they are not a reliable business partner anymore. The question is no longer if they change the deal but how much and when. A friend said that Unity doesn't suffer a loss of finances but a loss of trust. And that is much worse for a company.

Why does it matter to you? Because of that change a lot of awesome developers, who gave us amazing games, now have to rethink how they build their games. Experience, resources, frameworks, assets - All these things to give you a great game are mostly gone. I can not estimate how big the impact on the quality and pricing on future video games by former Unity devs will be, but I can imagine it will be noticeable.

The Unity Engine was a wonderful Husbando. But as it is a common trope in many stories (and at times in real life) the in-laws are ruining the marriage.

Have fun ^^ We will keep doing our best to give you new and amazing games.

This brings to mind the Pony coding language somebody developed (idk i think they named it Harmony). Some Ponybro should develop a Engine xD

Good morning ^^ Thank you for your reply.

There this esoteric programming language, which is formatted like a letter to Princess Celestia. It's called FiM++ and was made back in 2012. But it's nothing for big projects.

About engine development - a couple people I talk with here and there may migrate from Unity to Godot. Since Godot is Open Source some Ponybro may contribute to the source code, because a feature is missing. By just using it and voicing wishes for the future also helps.

Unity says they want to democratize the developer market and frankly, they really do. Many devs are now looking for other engines and will contribute, iterate and improve the landscape for all of us. In the middle of this chaos it is good to see that we will help each other in direct and indirect ways.

Ah right fim++ haha. Ya glad there are lots of other options.
